california or bust!...part 1

Tuesday morning, just a day after we arrived home from Pocatello, we headed off for California.

Ben and I were both really worried about the 13 hour drive, and how Molly and Luke would handle it.  We had a few rough times, but overall, they did way better than expected.  Molly ended up being the easiest traveler!  Amazing.

We pulled in to Sam and Shereans house around 10:30pm.  Not too bad.

The kids were so excited to play with their cousins, but we had tickets to go to Alcratraz in San Francisco that day, so we woke up, ate and headed to the big city.

The traffic was absolutely terrible, and Molly and Luke struggled during the drive there, so by the time we got out of the car, we were all a bit frazzled.  The kids calmed down and were pretty excited to ride the ferry boat out to Alcratraz Island.

Unfortunately, William, Luke and Molly were complete wrecks during the entire tour.  It was an absolute disaster.  We didn't even get to come close to finishing the tour.  Ben and I were beyond our limit, and the three kids just kept screaming, crying and tantruming.  We were getting dirty looks from everyone, and it was so, so, so stressful.

We had about a 2 minute window of peace, where I was able to snap one picture.
cracks me up. Luke is trying to fix the sink in the jail cell. haha!

I felt terrible for Mary and Sam, because they were being so good, and they were very interested in the prison.  I wanted to be able to go through it all with them and explain everything.

Instead, Ben and I took turns holding screaming babies and standing outside with one of them in time out about 10 times.

We left Alcratraz extremely upset and discouraged.  Maybe in 6 years or so, we will try it again, or at least leave the babies home next time.

Luckily, the rest of the day in San Francisco was great!  We ate dinner at a yummy place called the Chowder Hut at Fisherman's Warm.  They had some awesome calamari, and we had the traditional sour dough bread bowl with clam chowder.

After dinner we walked around and watched some cool street shows, bought a painting that we watched a guy do, and ate cotton candy and churros.  Molly has a nice nap on Ben's shoulder, and the kids did really well the rest of the time there.

San Francisco is a pretty cool place to visit, and I like that my kids can experience a big city, and a new culture.

The next day the kids played and played and played with their cousins.  They live in a kid wonderland!  The kids spent hours out in the fig tree fort.  It is the most amazing fort!  I would have spent my entire childhood there, if I had a fig tree like that.
The view of the fig tree from the house...it's HUGE

The fig tree fort had a zip line, and log roll, tables, chairs, a fire pit, and lots and lots of figs.  The kids had so much fun playing in there.

Uncle Sam took Luke on his dream ride, and pulled him behind a tractor!  Soon, all of the other kids joined as well.

Farmer Ben

Sherean took the older kids to the creek where they swam and played.  Sam found and caught a king snake, which bit him.  According to Sherean, Sam was so excited that the snake was biting him that he didn't even act scared!  He came home absolutely beaming and told me the story over and over and over again.  He cracks me up!

Mary was obsessed with the horses and spent every second she could out with them, feeding, grooming and riding.

The kids also love the chickens, and goat, the sheep and every other part of ranch life.  It truly was a wonderland for them!  I loved seeing them have so much fun with their cousins and making such great memories.

We did pull the kids away from the ranch long enough to take a visit to the Jelly Belly Factory.
It is a fun place to visit, and this year Luke was completely enthralled with all of it.  He just sat with his face plastered to every window at each station, watching the machines do so many cool things!

To be continued......

4th of july shenanigans

A few days after Ben's bike race, we packed up and headed to Pocatello to celebrate the 4th of July.

The kids and I were really excited, because celebrating the 4th of July in Pocatello at grandma and grandpa's house is the best!  It was my favorite Holiday (aside from Christmas) growing up.  So many awesome traditions, and so patriotic.

Molly was in the middle of her 7th ear infection, so we were worried about her, but she did really well considering.

We arrived late Thursday night, after a full day at 7 Peaks for me and the kids.  We crashed in grandma's nice cool, dark basement, and woke up ready to play.

I decided to use my shopping money from my Birthday and hit up some stores in Pocatello.  Mary came with me, and we had a really fun shopping day together.  I FINALLY got some clothes that I like and that fit me.  It has been a long time since I have been shopping for normal size clothes for myself.  I have been pregnant, or had a post pregnant body for almost 10 years now.  I came home grinning from ear to ear.  Mary got some cute things as well.

The second half of the day, we went boating!!!  The water was too rough for waterskiing, but the kids had a blast going on the tube.  Mary and Sam were way more brave, and loved going fast and hitting some pretty big waves.  Even William and Luke got in the tube. Molly enjoyed the boat ride, and didn't scream at all with her infected ears.  She is such a trooper.  It was a lot of fun.

That evening we had pizza and just hung out.

The next morning, I woke up early and ran the canal.  It felt like I was with an old friend again.  I have put thousands of miles on that canal, and I love the feeling I have being up there in the peace of the early morning, with the fields, the water, and all of the familiar sounds, sights and smells of my childhood.

My heart was very heavy coming in to this trip, and I was struggling with some pretty serious things.  It was so healing and uplifting to be up there, running, and feeling so vividly all of the comforts, memories and joys of my childhood and my home.  It just reminded me of how good life is, how good God is, and how blessed I am.  I was very grateful for that run, it was so needed.  I sure did miss my running buddy Tess though.  I hope she was there running next to me in spirit.  Dogs really are man's best friend.

When I turned on to my street at the end of the run, it was lined with flags that the youth put up every year.  I was caught with some emotion as I thought about this country and all that it stands for.

When I got home, Molly, Luke and I headed over to the church for the annual 4th of July breakfast the 7th ward has put on every year since I can remember.  Everyone else was still sleeping. This breakfast is something that my dad and brothers talk about and wait for every year.  It really is THAT good.

After the breakfast, we headed home and took some fun pictures.  My heart was full as I though about this country we live in.  I also felt pretty concerned for our country as well.  Same sex marriage was just approved for all 50 states a week earlier, and the impact of it was pretty interesting.  The fight between religion, country and the laws of the land is becoming more and more heated. More and more people are speaking out, picking sides and becoming extremely opinionated.  It worries me a lot, but I trust that the Lord will keep his hand over this promised land.  I just pray that my children will be strong enough to fight the battles that are sure to keep coming.

William came marching outside in his "outfit" and insisted on a photo shoot of his own.  I love it!

The original plan was to stay at my parents house and play in the yard until the firework show, but we all had the boating bug in us, so we headed back out on the boat again.  Ben and Molly stayed home this time.

We went to the Idaho Falls River, which was FREEZING, but that didn't stop us.
After a few tries, Mary got up on skis!!!!

She did it a couple times, and now has it down.  I was in the water helping her get up, so once she got up, I got to float around the river holding up a flag until she was done, and they came to pick me up.
Go Mary Go!

I got to do a ski run myself, and it was awesome!  So much fun.

Sam is determined to try it later this summer, or next year.  It will be great to have some waterskiers in our own family!  The tradition lives on! Now we just need a boat...

After boating, it was off to the firework show.
I was worried about Molly, and all of the noise, but she did great.  The show was probably the best one I have ever seen.  I love it when they do patriotic music with the show.  My heart was more full than ever with love for my country, and also some concern about it's future and the children of it's future.

After the city fireworks, it was my turn...Bahahaha

It was a BLAST!  (yes, pun was intended)
aagghhhh, there is something so incredibly fun about fire and fireworks.  It brings out the pyro in us all.
the next morning.
We left the next morning.  I was able to have some really good talks with my parents, and also receive a father's blessing from my dad.  It was very healing to be home, and to feel the love and concern of my parents.  I had some things that I really needed to talk about and work through, and it was just so nice to be home and to be feeling the comfort of my parents and my surroundings.

We got home Sunday night, and unpacked.  We had one day to unpack, re-pack, and get the house in order, before we were headed off to California!!!

4th of July proved itself once again to be an amazing holiday!  God bless the U.S.A.

summer

Sun kissed cheeks, bleached blonde hair, Captain America Bandaid, popsicle stained shirt, cars and rocks in pockets, plaid shorts with a striped shirt, black feet from not wearing shoes, fell asleep sitting up at 5:30pm.

Must be summer!

canyon's downhill race

At the end of June, Ben had his second downhill race of the season up at Canyons.  The kids and I drove up to support him.

This was a longer course, and it was blazing hot outside, but Ben did really well.

He got on the podium, and took third place!

It was his first race wearing his Go Ride jersey.  That is his sponsor.
Lookin' good!

Good job Ben.

sisters

I love this picture.

The other day, I heard a little "crunch, crunch," coming from the laundry room.  The cat food is in there, but it didn't sound like Penny was in there having a snack.

I walked into the laundry room, and this is what I found!

Does she look guilty or what! hahaha

I caught Molly with her hand in the "Cookie jar" so to speak.  She had a mouth full of cat food, and was happily eating it.

When I reached down to pick her up, she quickly grabbed two fist fulls of cat food and started trying to shove it all in her mouth.

I tried so hard not to laugh, but I couldn't help it.  It was so disgusting and so funny.  This didn't help the situation, because then Molly thought is was great.

I tell you what, every single time Molly burped that day, we all just about died!

Silly Molly.
